As the player invariably becomes a "Hand" of this organization (the aforementioned field agents/assassins, sent out to "solve problems" that threaten the stability of The Pact) internal questions are always raised about the methods Avadon employs, and those you might personally employ, in order to achieve your goals. The authority of Avadon is absolute, which makes it as many enemies as allies (probably far more so the former, honestly), and it inspires a degree of fear in all but the insane when Avadon's Eyes are upon them. Avadon acts as an independent entity where agents, assassins, and spies - bolstered with the best magic and equipment that not even money can buy - are sent out to maintain the peace of The Pact at any cost: an imposing manifestation of the idea that the end (peace) justifies the means (death and oppression).

The Avadon series concerns a continent named Lynaeus which has a powerful five-nation alliance in its center colloquially known as "The Pact." The peace of The Pact has been fragile at the best of times, but the nation states and the hostile "Farlander" countries that occupy the surrounding coastal regions have always been kept in check by the administration of Hanvar's Council and the might of the Black Fortress of Avadon.

Each game to come out of his studio Spiderweb Software looks more or less identical: axonometric or top-down level design that has small parties with limited skill trees take on carefully considered quests and enemy group encounters in settings with a significant amount of worldbuilding behind them. That's by design, of course, and I'm not using the observation as a pejorative: for genre veteran Jeff Vogel (who has been making these specific types of turn-based CRPGs since the mid-90s) every one his projects is consciously big on mechanics and storytelling and light on presentation. Avadon 2: The Corruption was originally released in 2013, but it looks and plays like a game released thirty years ago, not seven. Honestly, the last 10 hours or so were so tedious that I'm not sure i can muster the energy to care about Avadon 3 - maybe after a break (I did just play Avadon 1 so maybe some fatigue has set in).Sometimes, when faced with a scary new decade, we look to the familiar comforts of the old. This might not matter to some, but I do like to try to get the best ending I can while staying true to canon. Also, if Avadon 3 is like Avadon 2 was for 1, nothing you do matters in the end because 3 will have it's own canon. No matter what you do for your companions, there really isn't much about it in the epilogue. Again, they do things to oppose Avadon forcing you to do so as well. Like Avadon 1, all companions have quests where you gain their loyalty or lose them. I also hate how it seems like you are somewhat pushed to either go against Avadon or at least Redbeard as everyone you meet seems to hate Avadon/Redbeard (and for the most part wasn't good or satisfactory enough for me). You barely interact with Redbeard, and you don't meet the other faction leaders until you are pretty much ready to take them out. The issue is I personally saw no reason to do any of that. You work for Avadon, but always get hint that you could stay loyal, but overthrow Redbeard. My other issue is that the "factions/decisions" is a bit of a joke. It was so bad I was tempted to just drop the difficulty to Casual just to beat the game, but pride wouldn't let me. It's not fun when I have to spend 15+ minutes in large battles against groups of foes who also boost their stats while enemy mages seemed to charm one of my guys without fail every battle despite whatever I did. Maybe it's just me, but I would rather fights be too easy than wonder why my max level characters with good gear, stats, and items was struggling to kill enemies more than at any point in the game. Typically a game becomes almost too easy or too tedious. I know balancing must be tough - you have to consider different skill levels, whether people do sidequests, etc. That's when things went horribly wrong as I entered the final phase of the game (basically taking on the final bosses of each area). Then, I reached max level, had good gear, and good enchantments. I mean it was fine for maybe 35ish hours. Avadon 2 definitely seemed to up the difficulty and not really in a good way in my opinion. Maybe it was too easy and so that was corrected. I felt Avadon 1 was pretty easy on Normal. This isn't a concern for most people, but considering Avadon 1 was smooth during LInux this was disappointing. It ran poorly on Linux (at least during combat where it felt like single digit FPS - outside it was smooth). How can someone who's played for 46 hours not recommend a game? Simple,
