CFC/Rus gained a clear win by inflicting heavy losses on N3/PL and successfully capturing B-R5RB. A massive battle erupted in the system, and numerous smaller engagements occurred throughout the game universe as players attempted to block reinforcements from joining the battle. Being a key staging area used by N3/PL in the war, the CFC and Russian coalitions began pouring players into the system in a swift offensive, and N3/PL moved in a large fleet of players as a response. Part of a larger conflict known as the Halloween War, the fight started after a single player controlling a space station in the N3/PL-controlled star system B-R5RB accidentally failed to make a scheduled in-game routine maintenance payment, which made the star system open to capture. The in-game cost of the losses totaled over 11 trillion Interstellar Kredit (ISK), an estimated theoretical real-world value of US$300,000 to $330,000 (equivalent to between US$338,727 and $372,600 in 2021), as derived from the contemporaneous market value of PLEX, an item purchasable with real currency that can be redeemed either for subscription time or traded for in-game currency. The 21-hour-long conflict pitted the Clusterfuck Coalition and Russian alliances (CFC/Rus) against the N3 Coalition and Pandemic Legion alliance (N3/PL), and involved over 7,548 player characters with a maximum of 2,670 players in the B-R5RB system at one time. The Battle of B-R5RB or the Bloodbath of B-R5RB ( / ˈ b iː t æ k ɑːr f aɪ v ɑːr ˈ b iː/ ( listen)) was a massive-scale virtual battle fought in the MMORPG space game EVE Online in January 2014 (YC 116 in-game), possibly the largest player-versus-player battle in gaming history at the time. Damages amounted to an approximate real-currency value of $300,000-330,000 USD. Upwards of 130,000 players are still duking it out for in-game territory.Total forces involved 7,548 participants. The most expensive ship destroyed during the battle, Grencia Mars’ Vanquisher cost an estimated $5,500 equivalent in $USD.ĭespite the digital bloodshed, the Massacre at M2-XFE is just one battle amidst EVE Online’s ongoing “World War Bee 2,” the game’s third universe-spanning war. Much of the ships however are the result of thousands of man-hours grinding for resources.

The estimated total of damages in $USD is based on how much in-game currency (called PLEX) it would cost to replace each ship. To commemorate the event (and the associated damage), an official monument bearing the names of all players involved in the battle is being constructed by developer CCP. However, in this rare instance it did indeed happen, causing the biggest fight we have ever seen, both for the numbers of players involved and the amount of assets destroyed. It is rare in EVE to see so much at stake in a single fight as the losses can undo years of effort from thousands of participating players.

“One side started escalating the fight to the absolute maximum of their resources, and the other matched in full not just in terms of manpower but also in the value of assets committed. "This battle is a bit like a poker game where both players stockpiled weapons for several years and then went all-in,” said PAPI member Gobbins. Among all classes of ships, PAPI lost a total of 1,810 ships while the Imperium lost 1,596.

PAPI forces lost a combined 130 Titans while the Imperium lost 122. Of the 1,304 Titan ships that participated in the battle, a whopping 257 of them were destroyed.

Fighting only ceased when EVE was scheduled to go offline for downtime maintenance.

The ensuing battle lasted approximately 14 hours, with both factions losing supercapital ships (the largest kind in-game, roughly the size of seven Empire State buildings) at a relatively equal rate.
